Great review, guys. I love these updates because I’m a shoe-junkie.
One thing I’d like to hear a little more about, though, is value. Are the shoes a good bang for the buck?
Thanks!
Brandon
Great review, Travis. It sounds like quite a shoe. I like the new look of the website as well.
@Brandon – These shoes retail for $75 which is somewhat low these days when pretty much everthing else out there is hovering around the $100 mark. I can’t currently speak to longevity but at face value I’d say yes. Also, there are some great features of this shoe that I think you can justify at the list price.
@Chad, thanks for checking it out! I appreciate the comment on the site too!
@Brandon: I agree with Travis, relative to a lot of the popular trail shoe options out there right now, the New Balance MT/WT 100’s seem like a good value at ~$75.it seems to me that many (if not most) options in this “class” of shoe are closer to the $90-$100 range.
The point on durability is a good one. I have about 100 miles on my pair of NB 100’s by now, all on very rocky terrain. So far, they are holding up very well, especially considering their low weight. I would say they may be closer to a minimalist shoe, but not necessarily minimalist construction.
Nice post dudes!
I have been in a pair for just under 2 months now, and though I am rotating them that is still longer than I could ever go with a pair of 790’s (to continue that comparison). Maybe that sheds some light on durability Brandon?
And I would like to input that while it IS glued in, you can still yank out the sockliner, something most people probably won’t bother with but may, if just to cut more weight. People that are considering dropping an arch support or orthotic may want to reconsider why they would buy this shoe in the first place.
Performance in light mud has been great, and the interior is nearly seem free for those who like to go without socks.
Nice review guys!
You mention that there is a bit more arch/pronation support than you initially expected.
How would you compare the arch support of the 100s with that of the Montrail Mountain Masochist? If it is even possible to compare. I believe you have worn the MM’s. Thanks for any insight you can provide.

@Colin – thanks for the great feedback and great comparison on your blog about the 790 vs. 100!!
@David – I would say the arch support between the 2 are actually pretty much the same in feel. What is different is that the MM has a dual density midsole so it has harder foam under your arch than in the heel or forefoot so it aids a bit in gait correction. The 100 is the same foam all the way through.
Ok, cool. Thanks Travis.
Thanks for all the additional feedback. Good to have like-minded folks thinking about this stuff!

Hi Travis. I’m a product manager at NB and worked on the 100. Thanks for the great review. I wanted to clarify one point though if that’s okay. You mentioned that the insert is not removable. This was done intentionally as feedback from our runners was that the insert was moving around too much inside the shoe. We were unable to determine why this was happening so we glued it down. But just a little. If you give a small tug, it will rip right out and won’t damage the shoe or the insert.
Thanks – Bryan Gothie
Great review guys. I’m loving that some of the big shoes companies are getting out there into the minimalist trail market. Can you comment on how much of a heel raise the MT 100 gives? This is important for true minimalists since barefoot has 0 rise and allows the achilles to stretch out more on each foot strike.
Hi Travis,
Great review once again. Question, would you run a 100 miler in this shoe?
Is the cushioning adequate enough in your opinion?
Cheers
Good review Bro. That is one light trail shoe! I’m still enjoying the Montrail MM, but would consider the NB for an even lighter minimalist shoe for shorter distances (50M and under). Not sure how my feet would hold up with this shoe for 100M.
